Recollection of the Buddha
Iti pi so bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsaṃbuddho
vijjācaraṇasaṃpanno sugato lokavidū
anuttarapurisadammasārathī
satthā devamanussānaṃ buddho bhagavā ti.
- He is a Blessed One, a Worthy One, a Rightly Self-awakened One,
- consummate in knowledge & conduct, one who has gone the good way, knower of the cosmos,
- unexcelled trainer of those who can be tamed, teacher of devas & human beings; awakened; blessed.
Recollection of the Dhamma
Svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo,
Sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko,
Opanayiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī ti.
- The Dhamma is well-expounded by the Blessed One,
- to be seen here & now, timeless, inviting all to come & see,
- pertinent, to be seen by the observant for themselves.
Recollection of the Sangha
Supaṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
Uju-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
Ñāya-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
Sāmīci-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
Yadidaṁ cattāri purisa-yugāni aṭṭha purisa-puggalā:
Esa bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho—
Āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjali-karaṇīyo,
Anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā ti.
- The Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced well,
- the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced straightforwardly,
- the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced methodically,
- the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced masterfully,
- i.e., the four pairs—the eight types—of noble ones:
- That is the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples—
- worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of respect,
- the incomparable field of merit for the world.
Pancasila (5 training rules)
- Pāṇātipātā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- Adinnādānā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- Kāmesu micchācārā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- Musāvādā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- Surā –meraya-majja-pamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- I will obeserve the training rule to refrain from taking life
- I will observe the training rule to refrain from taking what is not given
- I will observe the training rule to refrain from inappropriate sexual relations
- I will observe the training rule to refrain from wrong speech
- I will observe the training rule to refrain from intoxicants (drugs/alcohol)
The 4 Divine Attitudes
Mettā – Goodwill
Ahaṁ sukhito homi
Niddukkho homi
Avero homi
Abyāpajjho homi
Anīgho homi
Sukhī attānaṁ pariharāmi
- May I be happy.
- May I be free from stress & pain.
- May I be free from animosity.
- May I be free from oppression.
- May I be free from trouble.
- May I look after myself with ease.
Sabbe sattā sukhitā hontu.
Sabbe sattā averā hontu.
Sabbe sattā abyāpajjhā hontu.
Sabbe sattā anīghā hontu.
Sabbe sattā sukhī attānaṁ pariharantu.
- May all living beings be happy.
- May all living beings be free from animosity.
- May all living beings be free from oppression.
- May all living beings be free from trouble.
- May all living beings look after themselves with ease.
Karuṇā – Compassion
Sabbe sattā sabba-dukkhā pamuccantu.
- May all living beings be freed from all stress & pain.
Muditā – Empathetic Joy
Sabbe sattā laddha-sampattito mā vigacchantu.
- May all living beings not be deprived of the good fortune they have attained.
Upekkhā – Equanimity
Sabbe sattā kammassakā kamma-dāyādā kamma-yonī kamma-bandhū kamma-paṭisaraṇā.
Yaṁ kammaṁ karissanti kalyāṇaṁ vā pāpakaṁ vā tassa dāyādā bhavissanti.
- All living beings are the owners of their actions, heir to their actions, born of their actions, related through their actions, and live dependent on their actions.
- Whatever they do, for good or for evil, to that will they fall heir.
Kariniya Metta Sutta (loving-kindness)
Karaṇīyamatthakusalena
Yantaṁ santaṁ padaṁ abhisamecca :
Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca
Suvaco cassa mudu anatimānī
Santussako ca subharo ca
Appakicco ca sallahukavutti
Santindriyo ca nipako ca
Appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho.
Na ca khuddaṁ samācare kiñci
Yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṁ
Sukhino vā khemino hontu
Sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā
Ye keci pāṇabhutatthi
Tasā vā thāvarā vā anavasesā
Dīghā vā ye mahantā vā
Majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā
Diṭṭhā vā ye va addiṭṭhā
Ye ca dūre vasanti avidūre
Bhūtā vā samhavesī vā
Sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
Na paro paraṁ nikubbetha
Nātimaññetha katthaci naṁ kañci
Byārosanā paṭīghasaññā
Nāññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya .
Mātā yathā niyaṁ puttaṁ
Āyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe.
Evampi sabbabhūtesu
Mānasambhāvaye aparimānaṁ.
Mettañca sabbalokasmiṁ
Mānasambhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ
Uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyañca
Asambādhaṁ averaṁ asapattaṁ.
Tiṭṭhañ caraṁ nisinno vā
Sayāno vā yāvatassa vigatamiddho
Etaṁ satiṁ adhiṭṭheyya
Brahmametaṁ vihāraṁ idhamāhu
Diṭṭhinca anupagamma
Silavā dassanena sampanno
Kāmesu vineyya gedhaṁ
Nahi jātu gabbhaseyyaṁ punaretī ti.
- What should be done by one skillful in good
- So as to gain the State of Peace is this:
- Let him be able, and upright and straight,
- Easy to speak to, gentle, and not proud,
- Contented too, supported easily,
- With few tasks, and living very lightly;
- His faculties serene, prudent, and modest,
- Unswayed by the emotions of the clans;
- And let him never do the slightest thing
- That other wise men might hold blamable.
- (And let him think:) "In safety and in bliss
- May creatures all be of a blissful heart.
- Whatever breathing beings there may be.
- No matter whether they are frail or firm,
- With none excepted, be they long or big
- Or middle-sized, or be they short or small
- Or thick, as well as those seen or unseen,
- Or whether they are dwelling far or near,
- Existing or yet seeking to exist.
- May creatures all be of a blissful heart.
- Let no one work another one's undoing
- Or even slight him at all anywhere:
- And never let them wish each other ill
- Through provocation or resentful thought."
- And just as might a mother with her life
- Protect the son that was her only child,
- So let him then for every living thing
- Maintain unbounded consciousness in being;
- And let him too with love for all the world
- Maintain unbounded consciousness in being
- Above, below, and all round in between,
- Untroubled, with no enemy or foe.
- And while he stands or walks or while he sits
- Or while he lies down, free from drowsiness,
- Let him resolve upon this mindfulness:
- This is Divine Abiding here, they say.
- But when he has no trafficking with views,
- Is virtuous, and has perfected seeing,
- And purges greed for sensual desires,
- He surely comes no more to any womb.
Ovada-patimokkha
A summary of Buddha's teachings
Sabbapapassa akaranam
ku salassa upasampada
sacittapariyodapanam
etam buddhana sasanam.
- Not doing anything evil,
- commitment to the wholesome,
- and cleansing one's own mind -
- this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
Khanti paramam tapo titikkha
nibbanam paramam vadanti buddha
na hi pabbajito parupaghati
na samano hoti param vihethayanto.
- The best moral practice is patience and forbearance;
- "Nibbana is Supreme", said the Buddhas.
- A monk does not harm others;
- one who harms others is not a monk.
Anupavado anupaghato
patimokkhe ca samvaro
mattannuta ca bhattasmim
pantanca sayanasanam
adhicitte ca ayogo
etam buddhana sasanam.
- Not speaking ill nor doing harm;
- restraint in the monastic code;
- moderation in eating;
- staying in remote lodgings;
- commitment to the higher mind —
- this is the instruction of the Buddhas.
5 subjects for frequent reflection
Jarā-dhammomhi jaraṁ anatīto.
Byādhi-dhammomhi byādhiṁ anatīto.
Maraṇa-dhammomhi maraṇaṁ anatīto.
Sabbehi me piyehi manāpehi nānā-bhāvo vinā-bhāvo.
Kammassakomhi kamma-dāyādo kamma-yoni kamma-bandhu kamma-paṭisaraṇo.
Yaṁ kammaṁ karissāmi kalyāṇaṁ vā pāpakaṁ vā tassa dāyādo bhavissāmi.
Evaṁ amhehi abhiṇhaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ.
- I am subject to aging. Aging is unavoidable.
- I am subject to illness. Illness is unavoidable.
- I am subject to death. Death is unavoidable.
- I will grow different, separate from all that is dear & appealing to me.
- I am the owner of my actions, heir to my actions, born of my actions, related through my actions, and live dependent on my actions.
- Whatever I do, for good or for evil, to that will I fall heir.
- We should often reflect on this.
