Recollection of the Buddha
Iti pi so bhagavā arahaṃ sammāsaṃbuddho
vijjācaraṇasaṃpanno sugato lokavidū
anuttarapurisadammasārathī
satthā devamanussānaṃ buddho bhagavā ti.
- He is a Blessed One, a Worthy One, a Rightly Self-awakened One,
- consummate in knowledge & conduct, one who has gone the good way, knower of the cosmos,
- unexcelled trainer of those who can be tamed, teacher of devas & human beings; awakened; blessed.
Recollection of the Dhamma
Svākkhāto bhagavatā dhammo,
Sandiṭṭhiko akāliko ehipassiko,
Opanayiko paccattaṁ veditabbo viññūhī ti.
- The Dhamma is well-expounded by the Blessed One,
- to be seen here & now, timeless, inviting all to come & see,
- pertinent, to be seen by the observant for themselves.
Recollection of the Sangha
Supaṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
Uju-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
Ñāya-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
Sāmīci-paṭipanno bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho,
Yadidaṁ cattāri purisa-yugāni aṭṭha purisa-puggalā:
Esa bhagavato sāvaka-saṅgho—
Āhuneyyo pāhuneyyo dakkhiṇeyyo añjali-karaṇīyo,
Anuttaraṁ puññakkhettaṁ lokassā ti.
- The Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced well,
- the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced straightforwardly,
- the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced methodically,
- the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples who have practiced masterfully,
- i.e., the four pairs—the eight types—of noble ones:
- That is the Saṅgha of the Blessed One’s disciples—
- worthy of gifts, worthy of hospitality, worthy of offerings, worthy of respect,
- the incomparable field of merit for the world.
Pancasila (5 training rules)
- Pāṇātipātā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- Adinnādānā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- Kāmesu micchācārā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- Musāvādā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- Surā –meraya-majja-pamādaṭṭhānā veramaṇī sikkhā-padaṁ samādiyāmi.
- I will obeserve the training rule to refrain from taking life
- I will observe the training rule to refrain from taking what is not given
- I will observe the training rule to refrain from inappropriate sexual relations
- I will observe the training rule to refrain from wrong speech
- I will observe the training rule to refrain from intoxicants (drugs/alcohol)
The 4 Divine Attitudes
Mettā – Goodwill
Ahaṁ sukhito homi
Niddukkho homi
Avero homi
Abyāpajjho homi
Anīgho homi
Sukhī attānaṁ pariharāmi
- May I be happy.
- May I be free from stress & pain.
- May I be free from animosity.
- May I be free from oppression.
- May I be free from trouble.
- May I look after myself with ease.
Sabbe sattā sukhitā hontu.
Sabbe sattā averā hontu.
Sabbe sattā abyāpajjhā hontu.
Sabbe sattā anīghā hontu.
Sabbe sattā sukhī attānaṁ pariharantu.
- May all living beings be happy.
- May all living beings be free from animosity.
- May all living beings be free from oppression.
- May all living beings be free from trouble.
- May all living beings look after themselves with ease.
Karuṇā – Compassion
Sabbe sattā sabba-dukkhā pamuccantu.
- May all living beings be freed from all stress & pain.
Muditā – Empathetic Joy
Sabbe sattā laddha-sampattito mā vigacchantu.
- May all living beings not be deprived of the good fortune they have attained.
Upekkhā – Equanimity
Sabbe sattā kammassakā kamma-dāyādā kamma-yonī kamma-bandhū kamma-paṭisaraṇā.
Yaṁ kammaṁ karissanti kalyāṇaṁ vā pāpakaṁ vā tassa dāyādā bhavissanti.
- All living beings are the owners of their actions, heir to their actions, born of their actions, related through their actions, and live dependent on their actions.
- Whatever they do, for good or for evil, to that will they fall heir.
Metta Sutta (goodwill)
Karaṇīyamatthakusalena
Yantaṁ santaṁ padaṁ abhisamecca :
Sakko ujū ca suhujū ca
Suvaco cassa mudu anatimānī
- Those who are skilled in the meaning of Dhamma
- should practice like this so as to realize the state of peace.
- Let them be capable and sincere, very sincere,
- easy to speak to, gentle and humble;
Santussako ca subharo ca
Appakicco ca sallahukavutti
Santindriyo ca nipako ca
Appagabbho kulesu ananugiddho.
- content and unburdensome,
- unbusied, living lightly,
- alert, with senses calmed,
- courteous, greedless among the families.
Na ca khuddaṁ samācare kiñci
Yena viññū pare upavadeyyuṁ
Sukhino vā khemino hontu
Sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā
- Let them not do the slightest thing
- that others might blame with reason.
- May they be happy and safe!
- May all beings be happy!
Ye keci pāṇabhutatthi
Tasā vā thāvarā vā anavasesā
Dīghā vā ye mahantā vā
Majjhimā rassakā aṇukathūlā
- Whatever living creatures there are
- with not a one left out—
- frail or firm, long or large,
- medium, small, tiny or round,
Diṭṭhā vā ye va addiṭṭhā
Ye ca dūre vasanti avidūre
Bhūtā vā samhavesī vā
Sabbe sattā bhavantu sukhitattā.
- seen or unseen,
- living far or near,
- those who have been born
- and those about to be born—
- may all beings be happy!
Na paro paraṁ nikubbetha
Nātimaññetha katthaci naṁ kañci
Byārosanā paṭīghasaññā
Nāññamaññassa dukkhamiccheyya .
- Let none deceive another,
- nor look down on anyone anywhere.
- Though provoked or aggrieved,
- let them not wish pain on each other.
Mātā yathā niyaṁ puttaṁ
Āyusā ekaputtamanurakkhe.
Evampi sabbabhūtesu
Mānasambhāvaye aparimānaṁ.
- Even as a mother would protect with her life
- her child, her only child,
- so too for all creatures
- unfold a boundless heart.
Mettañca sabbalokasmiṁ
Mānasambhāvaye aparimāṇaṁ
Uddhaṁ adho ca tiriyañca
Asambādhaṁ averaṁ asapattaṁ.
- With love for the whole world,
- unfold a boundless heart:
- above, below, all round,
- unconstricted, without enemy or foe.
Tiṭṭhañ caraṁ nisinno vā
Sayāno vā yāvatassa vigatamiddho
Etaṁ satiṁ adhiṭṭheyya
Brahmametaṁ vihāraṁ idhamāhu
- When standing, walking, sitting,
- or lying down while yet unweary,
- keep this ever in mind;
- for this, they say, is a divine meditation in this life.
Diṭṭhinca anupagamma
Silavā dassanena sampanno
Kāmesu vineyya gedhaṁ
Nahi jātu gabbhaseyyaṁ punaretī ti.
- Avoiding harmful views,
- virtuous, accomplished in insight,
- with desire for sensual pleasures dispelled,
- they never return to a womb again.
Mangala Sutta (blessings)
Evam me sutam
Ekam samayam Bhagavā
Sāvatthiyam viharati
Jetavane Anāthapindikassa ārāme
Atha kho aññātarā devatā
Abhikkantāya rattiyā abhikkanta vannā
Kevala kappam Jetavanam obhāsetvā
Yena Bhagavā tenupasamkami
Upasamkamitvā bhagavantam
Abhivādetvā ekamantam atthāsi
Ekamantam thitā kho sā devatā
Bhagavantam gāthāya ajjhabhāsi
- Thus have I heard :
- On one occasion, the Blessed One
- was dwelling at the monastery of Anāthapindika
- in Jeta’s Grove near Savatthi.
- When the night was far spent,
- a certain deity whose surpassing splendour
- illuminated the entire Jeta Grove,
- came to the presence of the Blessed One,
- and drawing near, respectfully saluted the Lord
- and stood to one side.
- Standing thus,
- he addressed the Blessed One in verse :
Bahū devā manussā ca
Mangalāni acintayum
Ākankhamānā sotthānam
Brūhi mangala muttamam
- Many deities and men,
- yearning after good,
- have pondered on Blessings.
- Pray, tell me the Supreme Blessing.
Asevanā ca bālānam
Panditānañ ca sevanā
Pūjā ca pūjanīyānam
Etam mangala muttamam
- Not to associate with fools,
- to associate with the wise,
- and honour those who are worthy of honour;
- this is the highest blessing.
Patirūpa-desa vāso ca
Pubbe ca katapuññatā
Atta sammā panidhi ca
Etam mangala muttamam
- Living in a civilized country,
- having made merit in the past,
- directing oneself rightly;
- This is the highest blessing.
Bāhu saccañ ca sippañ ca
Vinayo ca susikkhito
Subhāsitā ca yā vācā
Etam mangala muttamam
- Vast-learning, skills,
- a highly trained discipline
- and pleasant speech;
- This is the highest blessing.
Mātā pitu upatthānam
Puttadārassa sangaho
Anākulā ca kammantā
Etam mangala muttamam
- Support for one's parents,
- assistance to one's partner and children,
- and peaceful occupations;
- This is the highest blessing.
Dānañ ca dhammacariyā ca
Ñātakānañ ca sangaho
Anavajjāni kammāni
Etam mangala muttamam
- Liberal giving, living by the Dhamma,
- the helping of relatives,
- and deeds that are blameless;
- This is the highest blessing.
Ārati virati pāpā
Majjapānā ca samyamo
Appamādo ca dhammesu
Etam mangala muttamam
- To cease and abstain from evil,
- refraining from intoxicants,
- being careful in all things;
- This is the highest blessing.
Gāravo ca nivāto ca
Santutthī ca kataññutā
Kālena dhamma savanam
Etam mangala muttamam
- Respect, humility,
- contentment, gratitude,
- hearing the Dhamma on timely occasions;
- This is the highest blessing.
Khanti ca sovacassatā
Samanānañ ca dassanam
Kālena dhamma sākacchā
Etam mangala muttamam
- Patience, being easy to instruct,
- visiting wise and holy men,
- discussing the Dhamma on timely occasions;
- This is the highest blessing.
Tapo ca brahmacariyāñ ca
Ariyasaccāna dassanam
Nibbāna sacchikiriyā ca
Etam mangala muttamam
- Self control, living a noble life,
- realizing the noble truths,
- and winning nirvana;
- This is the highest blessing.
Phutthassa loka dhammehi
Cittam yassa na kampati
Asokam virajam khemam
Etam mangala muttamam
- A mind that, when touched
- by the ways of the world is unshaken,
- sorrowless, dustless, secure;
- This is the highest blessing.
Etādisāni katvāna
Sabbattha maparājitā
Sabbattha sotthim gacchanti
Tam tesam mangala muttamam ti
- Those who have fulfilled all these
- Are everywhere invincible,
- and they find wel-being in all places;
- This is their highest blessing.
Ovada-patimokkha
A summary of Buddha's teachings
Sabbapapassa akaranam
ku salassa upasampada
sacittapariyodapanam
etam buddhana sasanam.
- Not doing anything evil,
- commitment to the wholesome,
- and cleansing one's own mind -
- this is the teaching of the Buddhas.
Khanti paramam tapo titikkha
nibbanam paramam vadanti buddha
na hi pabbajito parupaghati
na samano hoti param vihethayanto.
- The best moral practice is patience and forbearance;
- "Nibbana is Supreme", said the Buddhas.
- A monk does not harm others;
- one who harms others is not a monk.
Anupavado anupaghato
patimokkhe ca samvaro
mattannuta ca bhattasmim
pantanca sayanasanam
adhicitte ca ayogo
etam buddhana sasanam.
- Not speaking ill nor doing harm;
- restraint in the monastic code;
- moderation in eating;
- staying in remote lodgings;
- commitment to the higher mind —
- this is the instruction of the Buddhas.
5 subjects for frequent reflection
Jarā-dhammomhi jaraṁ anatīto.
Byādhi-dhammomhi byādhiṁ anatīto.
Maraṇa-dhammomhi maraṇaṁ anatīto.
Sabbehi me piyehi manāpehi nānā-bhāvo vinā-bhāvo.
Kammassakomhi kamma-dāyādo kamma-yoni kamma-bandhu kamma-paṭisaraṇo.
Yaṁ kammaṁ karissāmi kalyāṇaṁ vā pāpakaṁ vā tassa dāyādo bhavissāmi.
Evaṁ amhehi abhiṇhaṁ paccavekkhitabbaṁ.
- I am subject to aging. Aging is unavoidable.
- I am subject to illness. Illness is unavoidable.
- I am subject to death. Death is unavoidable.
- I will grow different, separate from all that is dear & appealing to me.
- I am the owner of my actions, heir to my actions, born of my actions, related through my actions, and live dependent on my actions.
- Whatever I do, for good or for evil, to that will I fall heir.
- We should often reflect on this.
